Images from Tantra Song: Contemporary Tantric Paintings from Rajasthan which closed Dec. 10th at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. So glad that I caught the show in person, but I'd also be very happy to receive a copy of the sold-out book out of which the exhibit was formed under my solstice tree this year.

Octopus - Yoshua Okón

Stills from Yoshua Okón's video installation, Octopus, 2011 on view now at the Hammer through November 6, 2011.
From a clear, descriptive article in the LA Weekly:
You don't have to know anything about these men or their particular backgrounds to lose yourself in the action. It's enough to know you're watching bodies still wholly fluent in the stealth and agility of combat, and yet weirdly comfortable in the space of Home Depot. "It feels like a sort of transport occurred," Okón says. "Their bodies are in the parking lot, but they're somewhere else, almost as if I had taken footage from one place and transposed it over another."

Amy Ho - Bridge, Skylight & Beyond

Amy Ho's installation in the ATA (Artist's Television Access) window caught my eye last Spring. In Bridge, footage of traffic crossing the Bay Bridge is projected on a series of scrims. Here are a couple of her other installation projects that are equally simple and effective.

Beyond II, where the viewer must climb a ladder to see the piece

Skylight where a patch of sky is projected onto the ceiling of a tunnel.

Early B&W - Grant Mudford

Los Angeles 14
Houston
Los Angeles 6
I stumbled on Grant Mudford in the Street Sight show at the Armory Center for the Arts and fell in love with his photos of Los Angeles in the late 70s. I highly recommend flipping through all the portraits of artists he has on his website. Quite a cast of characters. Another favorite:

Memorice - Bruna Truffa

One of the really fantastic shows I got to see while in Santiago, Chile was Bruna Truffa's Memorice at Patricia Ready Gallery (these images are from Truffa's installation at Nord-Art, Carlshütte 2009).
My other favorite piece in the show was 'La Familia', which can be seen in a photoset from Valery MacKensy who collaborated with Truffa, providing the beautiful embroidered hearts of each member of the family.
Ah?

update - Candy Chang

You've probably already seen Candy Chang's Before I die wall installed on a derelict house in her New Orleans neighborhood. (I saw it here, but she's received a ton of press.) Now she's encouraging people to make their own Before I die wall in other cities with a kit you can get here.

Here's one in Almaty, Kazakhstan:
