One of the really fantastic shows I got to see while in Santiago, Chile was Bruna Truffa's Memorice at Patricia Ready Gallery (these images are from Truffa's installation at Nord-Art, Carlshütte 2009).

My other favorite piece in the show was 'La Familia', which can be seen in a photoset from Valery MacKensy who collaborated with Truffa, providing the beautiful embroidered hearts of each member of the family.

May I question you as to why you avoid it? By asking me if I can help your son, you mean, I suppose, if I can abolish homosexuality and make normal heterosexuality take its place. The answer is, in a general way we cannot promise to achieve it. In a certain number of cases we succeed in developing the blighted germs of heterosexual tendencies. I agree with you that Dr Jacobsen is a fine physician. He walks around like a pope among white nurses and pale patients. Then he pleads with me — becomes tame like a pigeon. Homosexuality is assuredly no advantage I was told by the people organizing documenta XIII. By the way Edvard Munch told me that Dr Jacobsen told you that Francis Bacon once told David Sylvester by being homosexual he was relieved of the heterosexual commitments in life, and by that he meant he could work more.

This week has been all events and no rest for the wicked. Last night I caught the last show of Sean Dorsey's The Secret History of Love at Theater Artaud. The show opened with another piece that I liked in particular called Reply Here about the trials and tribulations of craigslist missed connections postings. The piece is totally delightful and silly while deftly maneuvering around and through the poignant isolation and loneliness that comes with searching for lovers online.

The 10th Anniversary Fresh Meat Festival of Transgender & Queer Performance is coming up this June 16-19, and I'll guess that this is the piece Dorsey will perform then. Go see!

Drawing Restraint 17 - Matthew Barney

Yesterday at the San Francisco International Film Festival, I was fortunate to catch Matthew Barney accepting the 'Persistence of Vision' award, talking about his work and screening the latest installment of the Drawing Restraint series.

Drawing Restraint 17 was created for the Prayer Sheet with the Wound and the Nail exhibition at Schaulager in Switzerland. [You can tour the massive exhibition and see a little of the video piece on the Schaulager website.]

While the new video piece was a treat to see, I was fascinated to hear Barney discuss the performances he's been creating in collaboration with Jonathan Bepler [see KHU, Act 2 of Ancient Evenings (Art Practical Oct. 2010), REN performance stills (at Regen Projects, LA)]

The man is unstoppable, it's hard to keep up with all that he is doing and producing. As such, it was a pleasure to hear from him directly, even in the weird context of the film festival crowd. I wasn't brave enough to stand up and ask any questions. What would you ask Matthew Barney if you had the chance?

The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye - Marie Losier

I got a chance to see The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye last night and I don't want you to miss it. A second screening at the San Francisco International Film Festival is next Thursday, May 5.

Marie Losier has done a wonderful job weaving together all the far flung threads that make up the amazing love story that Genesis P-Oridge and Lady Jaye cemented with their pandrogyne project: Breyer P-Orridge. It's intimate and poignant, but most important to me, the film paints a full portrait of two people who were willing to take their ideas to the limit and forge a new frontier. Go see!

After eighteen months preparation, A Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide was presented over two sold-out nights at the ICA on 2 and 3 July 1998. Further exploring Forsyth & Pollard’s fascination with artifice as a catalyst, exactly 25 years to the day since David Bowie’s legendary ‘farewell’ performance as Ziggy Stardust, the artists re-created the entire show – in microscopic detail. Reflecting the contemporary fixation with virtual and simulated realities, the event was a timely critique of how stardom, authenticity and nostalgia can operate in contemporary culture. Combining an absolute fragility with a magical unpredictability A Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide provided a space and invitation for genuine audience interaction.

The loudspeaker wires, splitted and stripped, appear on the front of the radios.
Above every naked wire, a dripping tap. As they fall, the drops restore briefly the electric contact, and the radios emit sounds fragments. The choice of radio stations and the frequency of the drops result in pointillist and unpredictable compositions.

Hiding in Plain Sight - A solo exhibition by Hasan Elahi
at Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco
through April 23, 2011

Elahi's comprehensive self-surveillance project Tracking Transience (see an earlier post) is displayed at Intersection in banks of monitors flipping through thousands of images, lists of payments, locations, dates & times documenting the artist's movements since 2004. A large projection fills the east side of the gallery, showing Elahi's to-the-moment location on a google map with the most recent image posted to his website.

Falsely accused of involvement in the 9/11 terrorist plot, Elahi became the subject of an intensive F.B.I. investigation. After months of interrogations and nine consecutive lie-detector tests, he was cleared of suspicion. Following this harrowing experience, Elahi conceived Tracking Transience, a self-surveillance project that continually and publicly presents his exact location, activities, bank records, and other personal data. Although the daily images of places visited, food eaten, and money spent can be seen as details of contemporary life, for Elahi the subject matter becomes evidence of his life and his actions, establishing a voluntary and perpetual digital alibi against future accusations.

"Being outrageous was normal in this LA feminist art environment. Around the same time I read "Female Eunuch" by Germaine Greer. She wrote, and I paraphrase, "If you taste your blood when you scratch your finger, why don't you taste your menstrual blood?" All of that inspired my menstruation video Untitled. Ironically, this one-minute video initially shocked my mentor Judy Chicago. But she rebounded quickly and in response gave me her 1971 menstruation lithograph, entitled "Red Flag." - Susan Mogul from the catalog entry for Untitled (Menses) at VDB where the video can be obtained.
